World Class Workshops

To bring world class speakers to a local audience, from three venues, over three days, was the aim of Thompsons’ Tech Team. And boy did they deliver. In conjunction with Thompsons’ long-term performance mineral partner, Zinpro, from Tuesday 13th to Thursday 15th February, Industry Specialists took to the stage, the crush, the silo and the feed passage to discuss the subject of dairy efficiency. With hundreds attending the three days, the aim of reaching many producers with positive and practical messages on how to be more efficient, was certainly achieved. The need to get more output from every input is maybe not a new concept, but how producers can achieve a more efficient and ultimately more profitable system, is always worth hearing about.

By becoming more efficient, producers can make their business more sustainable, be better equipped to deal with environmental legislation and create a tougher business model that can cope with market fluctuations. Starting with the newborn calf, Dr. Alex Bach from the Spanish University of Catalan, pulled no punches with his recommendations on how to rear calves. From colostrum through to strong views on post-weaning feeding, Alex held the attention of the many producers that attended each of the workshops. Dr. Dan Humphries, through the use of dissection and videos, shone a light on the problems in achieving a better fertility profile for the herd. Zinpro’s Dr. Huw McConochie was on hand at the crush for two of the days, building on his message of catching problems early. Highlighting the need to manage dermatitis from an early age, again reinforcing the benefits of taking care of problems in youngstock right through to the milking portion of the herd. Thompsons’ Tech Team, brought the whole message together, using many buckets and practical methods, to bring the whole ethos of being more efficient to life. Ensuring that every input is maximized, without wastage, was the key focus from the Tech Team.

To maximise the most of our input, we have videoed each speaker and will be sharing these with you online, so don’t forget to follow us on our socials for more updates.

Thank You!!

Thompsons would like to thank the speakers, who took time out of their busy schedules to share their knowledge with all who attended. With lots of questions from many producers, it was clear that their advice and guidance was welcomed by those listening.

Alex Berry and her catering of ‘Simply Irresistible’ food, huge thanks for managing to feed as many mouths that attended each on-farm workshop.

David Scott photography for taking great photo memories that will be enjoyed for years to come.

Corish Film and Michael and Conor, who managed to work their AV magic in a rather challenging environment.

And finally, the host farmers. We really cannot thank you enough for giving us the opportunity and the stage to showcase the speakers. On units that are such a credit to all involved, at both Largyvale Farm courtesy of the Duncan Family and Corryglass Holsteins and the Moore Family. Your hard work and support has been second to none.
