With the quality of speakers presenting, the Thompsons calf meetings held in partnership with Bonanza calf nutrition, were always going to be a popular event. Three evening meetings were held in Coleraine, Newry and Omagh which give producers across the province the opportunity to attend.
The format of each meeting was to take producers right through from the dry cow to the end result of a healthy calf that will grow into a valuable member of the milking herd. Thompsons’ Technical Team took the lead on dry cow nutrition, body condition and dry cow management. This was followed by Shines’ Dr Amanda Dunn, who completed her PhD at AFBI Hillsborough on ‘Colostrum Quality and development of immunity in dairy calves”. Amanda explained the vaccination protocol that was needed to protect both the dry cow and the growing calf. Thompsons’ resident calf specialist, Jemma McHugh then went on to profile the Shine calf milk replacers Range, along with the importance of rumen development. Roger Blowey, a well known veterinarian, was the final speaker, who covered a wide range of subjects through to the end of the meeting. He then fielded questions on every aspect of calf care. His knowledge and enthusiasm on this topic was infectious and everyone left everyone with a refreshed outlook on managing their calves.
We would like to thank all of the speakers and particularly Roger, who travelled over from England to be with us for the meetings and is so generous with his knowledge and time. If you would like more information on the content of the meetings or would like to improve calf performance contact Jemma McHugh on; 07825 902126.
